As of UGC Circular 2023, online degrees from approved universities are legally equivalent to campus degrees for all purposes — government jobs, private employment, and further studies.

What is UGC-DEB Approval?

The University Grants Commission — Distance Education Bureau (UGC-DEB) is the regulatory body that grants recognition to universities for offering programs in online and distance learning modes. Without this approval, any online degree is invalid.

UGC-DEB approval is renewed every academic year. As of 2025-26, 57 universities are approved for Online Mode and over 101 for ODL (Open and Distance Learning) programs across India.
